Hello everyone, for those who don’t know me, I’m Audrey Cortez and yes, I am also a qualified and registered acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine herbalist. I’ve been practicing for approximately five years in the specialised art of  Traditional Japanese Meridian Therapy(TJMT). This style of therapy consists of acupuncture, herbal medicine and moxibustion. Moxibustion is an adjunct therapy where heat derived from Japanese mugwort is administered either directly or indirectly on the skin. This is beautiful therapy and if done successfully, one can attain fantastic results with treatment. (I’ll do a separate write up about the benefits in a future newsletter).

After reading Rodd Sanchez  article on why he practices acupuncture, I felt it was time to not only introduce myself, also, give a couple of insights to why I love this style of acupuncture and like Rodd, why do I practice acupuncture at all.

Moxibustion setThe first reason I practice JMT is due the gentle nature of the therapy. I fell in love with this style of acupuncture while I was a student. At the time, I felt the needling techniques taught in class did not resonate well with me and when I found TJMT, boy, it was perfect for me! I felt I was in my element and I knew I was going to help many future patients with TJMT. Whilst initialling learning the fundamentals of TJMT, I found myself being constantly confronted with acupuncture and the rollercoaster of emotions that is attached with it. It was not until I had gone to Japan to study with a couple of Senseis in both Tokyo and Imabari, with their guidance, patience and care have not only reassured me about this style moreover, inspired me to teach future students in this art.

The second reason I practice TJMT is because one can help those when other modalities cannot. I truly believe acupuncture has the potency to assist in treating conditions which are often difficult in Western medicine. I also like understanding how the ancient Chinese classical medical texts can be relevant and be applied today’s world. It still fascinates me, for example, how a simple formula can be used today for different conditions. Another example is how a condition which was unheard of thousands of years ago is now very prevalent in today’s society is written in the Classical texts.

Finally, why do I love practicing acupuncture? In a nutshell… because I am passionate in helping other people. Its that’s simple, this is my “why”. Waking up in the morning knowing you’ll be able to help someone to make their life that little bit better, whether it is give them some pain relief, helping someone to fall pregnant, assisting a child/infant to sleep better at night or aid a student to stress relief, is important to me. It gives me tremendous satisfaction when a patient achieves their desired result, especially with difficult cases.

I hope this captures a little about me and the “why” reasons I do practice acupuncture. TJMT has been my friend all along during the good times and bad. To be in this profession is truly humbling and often or not I am in awe and gratitude to this modality. I’ll always be thankful to all the teachers who have guided me in the past, present and future.

With great thanks
